ExampleOil Consumption in New Cars
Engine oil consumption in new cars is influenced by many factors. It can take several thousand Kilometres, sometimes upwards of 10,000 for a new engine to reach its normal consumption value. Some factors that contribute to oil consumption are;
- High performance engines
- High engine loads
- Severe driving conditions
To accurately check the engine oil in your new car follow these steps;
- Warm the engine up to operating temperature (a drive around the block will do)
- Make sure you are parked on level ground
- Switch off the engine an wait a couple of minutes (allowing the oil to drain back into the oil pan)
- Wipe the dipstick with a clean (lint free) cloth or rag
- Re-insert and pull out once more

The level should e somewhere between the Add and Full markings. It’s ok for it to exceed the full mark – allowing for expansion of the hot oil.
If you need to add oil make sure it is of the correct specification listed in your owner’s manual.
How will all this affect my New Car warranty?
We have inspected many owners’ handbooks for all sorts of makes and models and the answer is always the same.
A summary is as follows;
“The warranty of this vehicle becomes defective when the owner fails to properly maintain this vehicle in accordance with the owner’s instruction and service manual.”
“It is YOUR responsibility to maintain this vehicle and perform the checks outlined in the owners hand book.”
What this means is that if you don’t check the oil level etc every time you pull into the servo you have a chance of voiding your warranty.
