Holden Astra Ignition System & Other Issues
The ignition system used in the Astra uses Four individual coils (one per spark plug) The ignition coil is integrated into the coil pack system. The timing is non adjustable and is controlled by the ECU.
Some Common issues include;
- Traction Control Light. Sometimes this light will come on soon after the timing belt has been replaced, its possible that the insulation surrounding the Cam Angle Sensor has been disturbed causing the wires to short.
- ECM Light on. Failure of an ignition coil in the coil pack will cause the ECM light to illuminate
- Remote Entry Failure. In the event of the transponder key going out of sync with the control unit. Switch the ignition on and press either button within 30 seconds to re-synchronise.
- Timing Belt Failure. Timing belt failure is a common problem with the Astra.
- Vehicles built prior to March 2001 have a replacement interval of 8 years or 120,000km
- Vehicles built After to March 2001 have a replacement interval of 4 years or 60,000km.
Holden Recommend you have the belt replaced at 4 years 60,000km no matter what year model to be on the safe side.
